What is the Total Resistance of a Series Circuit?
You can calculate the total resistance of a series circuit
by adding up the resistance of each component.
Rtotal = R1 + R2 + R3 .....
In the circuit above with three resistors,
the
total resistance Rtotal is
the sum of the values of the three resistors.
Rtotal = R1 + R2 + R3
= 2 + 3 + 4
= 9 ohms.
This is a much bigger
resistance
than a parallel
circuit using
the same
resistors.
