What is Geothermal Power?
Generating electricity from hot rocks is called geothermal power.
How does Geothermal Power Generate Electricity?
Some countries have hot underground
rocks that are
close
to the Earth's
surface.
Water is pumped down to
the
rocks through a pipeline and returns to the surface
as steam
through another pipe. The steam
is
then forced through a
turbine which
turns a generator.
The original
source of the energy is
radioactive
decay of unstable
nuclei within the Earth.
What are the Advantages of Geothermal Power?
1. It is renewable.
2. It is reliable.
3. It does not cause pollution.
What are the Disadvantages of Geothermal Power?
1. It is limited to being used in those
parts of the
world where hot rocks are near the
surface.
