What is a Step Down Transformer?
A step down transformer has more
turns of wire on the
primary coil and less turns of wire on the
secondary coil.
This makes a smaller induced
voltage in the secondary
coil.
Compare this with a step up
transformer.
It is called a step down transformer
because the output voltage
is smaller than the input voltage.
If the secondary coil
has half as many
turns of wire then the output voltage
will be
half the input voltage. See the transformer
equation.
Decreasing the voltage does not
decrease the power.
As the voltage goes down, the current
goes up.
